How to keep your Pond Clean?

I am a serious pond enthusiast and I remember well trying to get the algae problem under control in the beginning. The BEST thing you can do for consistently clear water is to hook up a UV light between your pump and your filter. I bought pond bacteria purifier to keep it clean and it helps me to grow my fishes healthily. The water travels through a chamber and algae spores are exposed to UV rays, which kills them. It will also kill bacteria, so make sure you have some rocks and other medium in your pond to maintain the beneficial bacteria every pond needs to be healthy.

If you cannot afford a UV light this year, put a bale of barley (available at www.livingwateraeration.com) in the water to control string algae. You can dye the water with a special vegetable dye, also available at your local pond shop. This creates darkness for the algae and it dies off within a week or so. The dye does not hurt the fish or plants.

Put a water lily or water hyacinths in the water to shade the pond -- this will keep algae to a minimum and it is great for the fish. Good luck. A pond is a small ecosystem. Some algae are expected but your water should remain clear if your ecosystem is balanced. It took my pond almost a year to get balanced. Even then, rainwater or hot humid days can throw the balance off.
